The Perennial Question--When will my order ship?

As our ASIC chips make their way through the final packaging before they are joined to the boards and assembled into BitForce miners, we are having shipping cartons delivered and assembly people ready to complete the final step. If all goes well we will ship the first units this month. Those are the orders made last June. If you order now, because of the backlog of orders, you may not get your order until May or June of this year. We are not good enough prophets to tell you exactly what day your order will ship. If you ordered between June of last year and February of this year, your order will most likely be shipped before June of this year. We will update our shipping expectations once we have shipped out a few and see how fast this whole process goes. Please continue to check this blog, since I will be telling the ORDER DATE which we are shipping every day.

That seems to directly contradict what Josh said in this post just hours before yours.

Which is it, late April - early May, or not before May-June?

And that's why they are both labeled as estimates... not to be relied upon...

The estimate I have no problem with. It's more the lack of consistency in the estimate that's bothering me. Sabina tells a customer at the end of last week that his August order will ship in the May - June timeframe. Josh corrects that and states that orders placed now will probably ship in the second half of April. Now, we have a stickied thread on the forum that an order today will ship end of April - beginning of May, and this blog that you might be looking at May - June for orders placed now.

What is BFL's official estimate for the delivery of a unit ordered today? You can hardly blame people for continuing to make threads asking that question when the answer continues to change by months within the span of a couple days.

I am wondering about my order, which I placed on August 28th. On the customer site it shows my order dated December 11th. What is weird is that I have logged in and seen different order numbers associated with the different dates. Sent an email but haven't gotten any response. So I wonder if my August order is going to be treated like a December order? I hope not, but the only record I have that I ordered in August is an email receipt when I placed it, and a screen grab of the customer site order screen when it was showing my order from August. (if I visit that page now of course it shows December).

Getting actual estimates is impossible right now. Each person can only make a rough, best guess of when orders today will ship out.

For best or accurate estimate; you would have to know:
#1 . # of ASIC chips they will receive weekly
    #2 . bad # of chips (probably 1-4%?)
#3 . # of units produced per week by BFL
    #4 . the avg # of chips required for every 500 orders (ie. from 1-500, 501-1000, 1001-1500, etc.). Is chip avg. 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, etc??? per first 500, next 500, next 500, etc.

They will have a good idea of this 2 weeks into production. Even better 1 month in. For now, very rough estimates to go on.

Jody's estimate "might" be better than Josh's late April-early May but no one at BFL can give a better guess for another 2-4 weeks when production is up at full pace.

I think Jody's May & June guess is more accurate to me (gut feeling & quick math) but required info. above is missing to be 100% sure whether Josh or Jody is right on shipping times.

Edit: MrTeal made good point in forum. They have most of that info except for weekly production which they can try to estimate. In 2-3 weeks they should have enough data for that too and be able to give accurate shipping times IFF they do the math. Right now it looks like 3-5 months for orders made in mid-February. That is based off Josh's & Jody's guesses, which maybe right or wrong. Could be later than that but hopefully not.

We have been in this game for some time now. I didn't see anywhere on the site a formal apology or simple sorry to all the people they put faith in ButterflyLabs and more important, their money! We have been pushed/fulled on day-to-day basis while someone is "playing" around. To me, this job looks too big for whoever is doing it; either Josh or Jody or maybe they are the same person?
ButterflyLabs is holding huge chunk of money in their pockets for some time now, while in return we didn't get any physical product promised, just words and empty promises.

So even now after it looks like chips arrived and everything is moving and needs to be shipped, we have been told you will get it by end of June! Why?I really don't get it!!!
Something is fishy here and to me either they have difficulties with whatever they got or they didn't actually get anything and trying to buy more time!

I feel a lot of frustration right now and especially when you are waiting for someone to update the status of the work for 5 days, like Josh!

BFL should make sure to use registered mail with tracking!!! Plus, paying for insurance up to order value is something else that should be done too.

Unregistered can be stolen by mail service or left at door by mailman and stolen by someone else. Registered requires someone at that residence to sign for it or go to Post Office w/ID for pick up.

Tracking is good to have too to know where that package was last seen and where it is at.

I maybe stating the obvious but I want to make sure this is how BFL will ship the product to their customers.

Well, BFL has 4 days (including today) to start shipping and fulfill Josh's pretty confident statement that shipping should begin the week of the 18th. Not gonna hold my breath, though.

I also want to echo the importance of using some sort of registered/tracked shipping service. Especially since shipping charges inexplicably increased from the "$14 per order" to $38.... for $38, we'd better be getting insurance, and NO US Postal Service shipping. My mail carrier is a moron, and I've lost 2 packages that he said he delivered to my neighbor, but that my neighbor claims to not have.

    1) What made you feel the "confidence" for the week of the 18th, heh. They are all just guesses/hopes/prayers

    2) Pretty sure I've paid $34 for shipping per order since when I ordered my FPGAs. and it still says $34 for Standard Shipping on their website.

Are you reading some alternate universe BFL website that has different prices and more confident dates??? Perhaps that's why there's so much confusion around here...

From The Josh's 2-05-13 update: "So it's looking like the week of the 17th for shipping, probably a bit later in the week unless the bumping house really pulls it together, we might be able to ship as early at the 18th, but that is pretty optimistic, more likely is around the 22nd or so."

Maybe it's just me, but he seemed pretty confident there that they would start shipping THIS WEEK.

Also, here's a copypasta from my pre-order confirmation:
    Order
    Product Qty Unit Price Price
    BitForce Jalapeno ($149)

    2 $149.00 $298.00
    Shipping (US / Canada Priority ($14)) $14.00
    Total: $312.00
Now here's a copypasta from my order status on the BFL product page:

    Items Ordered

PRODUCT NAME SKU PRICE QTY SUBTOTAL
    Subtotal $298.00
    Shipping & Handling $38.00
    Grand Total $336.00
Definitely not living in some "alternate universe".

I agree about the confusion, though. BFL needs to have a single, consistent voice providing information. Whether that's Josh_BFL or somebody else, they could minimize speculation if only one BFL rep was dropping info to the masses. So, we wouldn't get one message from Josh, another from Jodi, another from Gustav the Janitor, another from that ginger kid working in the mail room, etc.

Maybe you should take bets on who gives the most accurate estimates. I'm old--he's young. I'm more conservative than he is.

I think you guys are missing my point.

If I call up a supplier to inquire about a product and Bob says they're building some and that they should be able to ship it next week, but when I call back Steve says they won't be ready for at least two weeks, I question the competence of the organization.

Given how small BFL is it shouldn't be hard to get people on the same page. This ASIC project is basically the future of this company, do you not have at least updates and projections every couple days that is a bad thing, as is having every employee quoting their own personal opinion on timelines instead of having actual corporate projections posted on the website.
